Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Green Hill Park was dedicated in June 2002. The four-acre grounds of the memorial include a small pond, walking paths, and the memorial features themselves.

The Massachusetts state legislature earmarked over $1.4 million for the project,

The memorial is designed in three sections: the Place of Flags, the Place of Words, and the Place of Names.

The Place of Flags is a circular plaza surrounded by an arbor constructed of California Redwood, featuring a central garden hosting three flagpoles, flying the US flag, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Flag, and the POW/MIA flag. The flags of all U.S. military service branches are displayed as well during special ceremonies.

The Place of Words is an area of the memorial where the words of veterans are etched in stones for viewing and contemplation, featuring the text of letters written home by 13 Massachusetts servicemen who died in Vietnam.

The Place of Names proclaims the names of 1,546 Massachusetts men and 1 woman veteran who remain missing or who died in combat as a result of wounds received while in action in Vietnam.
